Well-here we go! My first post! This will be a long one….
In order to see how Daisy came into my life, you have to start at the beginning. I rode horses for several years when I was younger. I took lessons, showed hunter/jumper, and won a lot on really super fancy horses. I ended up taking a break from riding when I went away to college, though, due to lack of time and interest in boys
Fast forward to a couple years ago (about 12 years after I stopped riding in the first place). I finished college, got a job, got married, got dogs and a house, my husband died soon after we were married though, and everything was turned upside down. I was 25 years old when my husband passed away-he was 33-and this was 9 years ago. After I started to come out of my shell from that setback, I decided that the way to go was to follow my dreams-you never know when you’re going to go, so enjoy life while you have the time! I started taking riding lessons at a local barn and really had a great time.
I started off riding a horse named Cowboy
He’s still there-being used as a lesson horse. Such a good boy! I quickly progressed to a few more novice to intermediate horses since I had several years of experience previously. I ended up leasing an OTTB named Joe. The lease lasted about a year before I really wanted my own. I had a good relationship with Joe (despite being thrown a couple times-once up against a wall and breaking 3 ribs), so I called a vet for a pre-purchase exam. Joe failed the exam miserably. It was very sad. He had bad arthritis and a sore back-possibly an old broken rib himself. I ended up passing him by and taking lessons from another trainer in the barn because my old one left.
My new trainer put me on one of her horses, Junior, and introduced me to dressage. Quickly, I took interest in this style-the beautiful flowing movements and the complete trust and understanding between horse and rider really appeals to me. I honestly think there is no finer style of riding. It’s just so beautiful to watch! I started reading up on horses in general, dressage as a sport, and watching several videos and such to learn as much as I could. I definitely wanted a horse that would excel in dressage! Enter Lucky….
My trainer and I went looking for a horse for me. She had fun because she LOVES to shop for horses, and this was just really exciting for both of us. We looked around at several and ended up going to see this AMAZING horse in Wisconsin. His name is SSF Doc Sockett, barn name “Mister”. He was green broke so I thought he’d be too much for me to handle. On the way home, my trainer and I talked. We both decided that we’d give him a go-he was just to beautiful to pass up.
I bought him, changed his show name to “Beginner’s Luck” or Lucky for short, we trained him for a while, I got on had several great rides, but then he spooked a couple times and I fell off and hurt myself. The trainer worked with him more. I got back on-no problems for a while, but then one night I fell off again during a lesson. “Get back on” she said-and next time make sure you grab the mane if you start to lose your balance. I got back on. Within 5 minutes he did the same thing and I fell off again LOL!!! “GRAB THE MANE NEXT TIME!” “I did!” I said back. “Well hold tighter next time,” she replied. I am well-versed in the old holding-the-mane trick and I was sure I did, but whatever. I got back on AGAIN. Five freaking minutes later he did the same thing and off I popped again. This time from the ground, I held up my hand triumphantly- “SEE? I GRABBED THE MANE!” A huge wad of hair was secured in my hand. Apparently Lucky has removable hair….. I told her that 3 was my limit so she got on and he finished his spooking and bolting session. Lesson 1-don’t buy a green broke horse if you’re just starting out.
I rode several more times with no problems until one day I did fall again. He was just too much for a beginning rider and I had come to terms with that. He also suffered from abscesses like every other week. We tried different shoes, talked to the vet, the farrier, etc. Finally we landed on some shoes that work for him and he only has abscesses once in a while now. While he was unrideable. though, I decided it was time to look into a horse that had been ridden before

He's a gorgeous boy!!!
